By UCHE USIM BusinessNews Index In pursuance of the desire to make the aviation industry safer, more viable and consumer-oriented, the Consumer Protection Unit (CPU) of the Department of Air Transport Regulation Directorate in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has embarked on series of consumer interactive fora to enlighten air travellers on their rights as consumers of aviation services. The latest of such fora at the Shehu Musa Yar-Dua Centre, Abuja, last Tuesday, attracted stakeholders including government representatives, industry practitioners, aviation service providers, comprising representatives of the Consumer Protection Council, the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, airlines, airport securities, agencies, and members of the public, among others. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. John Akanya, the Director General of the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), urged all service providers at the airport to put consumers first in order to ensure the sustainability of their servies. On his part, the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. Engr. Fidelis Onyeyiri, assured all the stakeholders that the authority would not rest on its oars in the pursuit of excellence in the aviation sector, adding that whatever would satisfy the consumers of its services will take pre-eminence. He urged all air travellers who have any problem while travelling to channel such complaints to the Consumer Protection Unit of the authority for appropriate actions. Onyeyiri stressed that NCAA has been up and doing in ensuring that airlines and other services providers conduct their businesses according to the rule of the game. At the event it was resolved that NCAA should intensify the enlightenment and education of air travelers, through all available means by collaborating with all consumer protection organizations. It was also agreed that passengers have a right to regular information on the reasons for flight delays. The forum also mapped out strategies to completely eliminate the phenomenon of airport touts popularly alleged "Abuja Boys". It also encouraged tour operators-cum airlines to introduce shuttle bus service to augment the transport services available to passengers at the airports. |
