Akeem Lasisi and Funmi Olorunyomi The ideological and creative philosophy that gave rise to the popular Ife Art School, which many will describe as the brand name or trade mark of the Fine Arts Department of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, will become the subject of discussion this month through June, as the department and its alumni hold its 30th anniversary celebration. The department was completely developed in 1975. The event, which entails special exhibition and conference, will, hopefully, afford stakeholders the opportunity to gauge the tenets and achievements of the Ife School, while also possibly examining new options in relation to happenings on global scenes and developments, as well as business and marketing imperatives. At a press conference held at the National Theatre, Lagos, last week, officials of the department and its old students exuded high spirits as they rolled out programmes for the celebration. From Ife came Head of Department, Dr Eben Sheba; a lecturer, Dr Ademuleya Sehinde; and a host of others. Accomplished fine artist, Dr Kunle Filani, who is currently the Provost of Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State, led Mufu Onifade and other alumni who appeared set to pay the department that produced them back in a good coin. On the agenda of the celebration are a travelling exhibition tagged, Ife Art School in Retrospect, and an international conference with the theme, Contemporary Nigerian Arts. On May 11 and 19, there will be an exhibition at the National Theatre, Lagos, while the same goes to Ife on May 26 and holds till June 12. The conference will take place from June 1 to 4. He said the department had attracted famous artists, erudite researchers and reputable scholars from all walks of life whose wealth of experience had been of immense benefit to students. He also cited the several achievements of the department, which included formation of Ona movement by five graduates and the Best of Ife exhibition series, which has been a remarkable achievement of the department that has become an annual event showcasing the robust harvest of talents produced by the department over the years. He pointed out that the anniversary was not only to celebrate the achievements of Ife art school but also to celebrate the immeasurable contributions of the graduates of the department to the wealth of the nation. “ This celebration is an oppourtunity for us to once again bring together our alumni, friends and benefactors. And solicit for their assistance for the development of the department in order to sustain the tradition of academic excellence in creativity thus promoting learning and culture,’ he said. The Provost of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Dr. Kunle Filani, said more was involved in art than entertainment. He said that art was involved in almost all aspects of life. Filani who is a 1980 graduate of the department appealed to the government to support art by providing adequate facilities in schools and promoting art by involving more artists in the technological development of the country. |
