Richard Mene Mone is a dancer with a vision. This vision first translated into reality last year as Dance Nigeria 2004. This year, the former two-time dance champion -- he won the 1985 Lagos State John Players Dance Championship as well as the 1989 National Freestyle Dance Championship of Nigeria -- hopes to make a more remarkable and apreciable imprint in the local dance scene.
This year's edition of his pet project -- tagged Sir Alex Akinyele's Secondary Schools' Cultural Choreography Dance Competition a.k.a. Dance Nigeria 2005 -- has already kicked off. There were state finals in such states as Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Kwara, Kogi, Niger and Kaduna in the past couple of months. The Lagos State finals kicks off on Friday for privately-owned secondary schools and on Monday for public secondary schools.
The grand finale of this year's, which he hopes would attract a lot of dignitaries, will be held on May 27 at the Banquet Hall of the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos.
The entire project was conceived around the need the foster unity among youths in the secondary schools with an intention of catching them young at the grassroot level. It also hopes to create the enabling environment for youths to showcase their talents and eventually serve as feeder for both the state and national dance troupes.
Mone, speaking on behalf of his organisation Dance Nigeria Consult, thus articulates the idea behind the event: "[It] is is borne out of our passion and love to see the Nigerian youths participate in a purely indigenous competition that will not be influenced by western tradition, culture and values."
Hence the participating schools are not only expected to don indigenous Nigerian costumes but also dance to the accompaniment of indigenous music. The choice of costumes for event, conceed the organisers, could be freestyle. This simply means that each choreographic team could have individual members dressed in the attires of the ethnic groups of their choice.
The music will be provided by the participating schools and could be produced live from indigenous instruments or played from CDs or cassettes. The judges will among other criteria look out for the team's ability to interpret the music through synchronised dance.
Prizes will be awarded not only to the overall winners but also to the first, second and third runner-up winners. Certificates of participation will be awarded to all participating schools. "Our vision is to re-orientate the Nigerian youths on the need to look inward by dressing, dancing and thinking Nigeria," said Mone.
