Akeem Lasisi A senior public relations officer at the Nigerian Ports Authority, Lagos, Mr. Agidi Ovureru, has drawn the attention of his ‘co-mariners’ and other lovers of literature to the beauty of African folktales, with his publication of The Orphan and Other Stories. Key players in the maritime industry rose to his support when the collection of eight children stories was launched recently. Among the dignitaries was the Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority, Chief Adebayo Sarumi, who launched the work with N250, 000. Incidentally, the writer confessed that Sarumi did not only assist him in the production of the book, but had actually inspired and challenged him to come up with a literary product. “The book came about as a result of our Managing Director’s challenge to me to write a new book within six months. I was highly delighted to hear from him that he derived pleasure from reading my stories even though they were targeted at young ones.” A Senior Editor at Longman Nigeria Plc, Mr. Kola Oni, who reviewed the book at the presentation, traced the relevance of the stories to the society, as well as the Okene/Kogi rural environment that produced the writer. “Every bit of his works touches his base,” Oni said. “He also has ample education and experience to see him through the task he set before himself.” The reviewer further described the stories in The Orphan as very didactic and interesting. “The language is racy and very easy to understand,” he added. He also commended the author for providing a glossary of difficult words at the end of the book. Ovurevu, who was formerly a journalist, said that the didactic folktales he tried to recapture in The Orphan, would help the society to re-awaken interest in the past. |
