This month music channel MTV Base on DStv turns its attention to one of Africa's biggest music stars, Femi Kuti. Viewers can look forward to an hour-long performance of this Grammy nominated singer on Sunday April 3 at 19:00 CAT. Femi is the oldest son of the late Nigerian Afro beat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. It is no wonder that he's grown to adopt some of his father's rhythmic sounds to create a winning formula in his music today. Femi was born in 1962 in London, where he spent most of his youth. He returned to Nigeria at age fifteen. Now an accomplished performer, Femi's success traces his musical influence back to his teenaged years when he spent hours listening to his fathers band practicing. During that time he accompanied his father's band to many performances in their home country. While his father was still alive, Femi had trouble establishing himself as an artist without being compared to his legendary father. But with lots of courage and determination he went on to start his own band and made a name for himself in the music industry. Femi's biggest break came in 1985 when he appeared at the Hollywood Bowl, leading his father's forty-piece band called Egypt 80. Fela had failed to make it onto the plane, having been reputedly arrested at Lagos airport. Femi, already a member of his father's band, came to the rescue that night, giving a show that brought the audience at the packed Hollywood Bowl to its feet. Even though the fans had paid to see and hear the charismatic Fela, Femi was able to deliver the same Afro-beat tunes that his father was popular for. After his father's death in 1997, Femi found himself in demand everywhere. And two years later, he had formed his own young band, the Positive Force, and released their debut album for Polygram Nigeria. Titled No Cause for Alarm, the success of the album in Nigeria brought Femi and the band international exposure, which saw them perform in Paris and around the globe. Today's Femi's album credits include Fight to Win (1991), Femi Kuti (1995), Wonder Wonder (1995), Beng Beng Beng (1998), Shoki Shoki (1999), Truth Don Die (1999), Blackman Know Yourself (2000), No Go Die (2000) and Chateau Flight Remix (2002). However, it was his Shoki Shoki release that drew more attention and made him a household name. This album has his father's strong traditional beats combined with Femi's new western influences. So all afro-beat fans can tune and immerse themselves in the artistic sounds of Femi Kuti on DStv. |
