Nigeria Airways: Workers Write Embassies over Gratuity

By Ndubuisi Francis
Aviation Union Grand Alliance (AUGA), a coalition of three unions in the aviation industry, has written all Embassies/High Commissions in Nigeria and International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) to prevail on Federal Government and the liquidator of Nigeria Airways to pay their pension and gratuity/severance benefits, outstanding pension arrears as well as gratuity for staff that were retired in 1999 and 2002.
In two separate letters by Secretary of AUGA chapter of Nigeria Airways, Jaja Somari, the workers said Federal Government has completed all formalities for the take off of Virgin Nigeria without addressing the issues concerning their entitlements.
They vowed that unless the liquidation processes are completed, no airline would fly as national flag carrier using routes already developed by NIgeria Airways.
"We can now authoritatively inform you that government has completed all formalities to fly the proposed Virgin Nigeria come the month of May 2005, without answering our call for the payment of the above mentioned three items.
"In the event that government/liquidator fails to meet our yearnings, then of course, Virgin Nigeria must never fly. We have resolved that until all the liquidation processes are completed, no airline in any disguise should fly as national or flag carrier using routes already developed by Nigeria Airways," AUGA said.
The coalition added that the three unions under the umbrella have the capacity and have indeed warned all the stakeholders within Nigeria to stay off Virgin Nigeria "to avoid any catastrophe that may occur," saying "until all our final entitlements are paid, no Virgin Nigeria must fly."
The workers urged the embassies to advise their nationals not to patronise Virgin Nigeria "as anyone who does that is at his or her own risk," adding however that they would appreciate "your quick intervention in bringing your international influence to bear on this issue."
