Ethnic fashion is surely going places. KEMI ARUWAJI reports an exhibition that celebrated African prints and accessories. Whenever you go you are bound to notice African fabrics and style. They are very notable for their artistic designs and colourful paintings. They always stand out. Little wonder that western designers are now looking towards African for inspiration. The beauty and dignity of African fashion were recently showcased at Terra Kulture, Nigerian's modern arts centre by Miss Adebimpe Adebambo of the Beampeh label. This graduate of painting from Yaba College of Technology says: "I use all manners of African fabrics with hand paintings to make outfits, be it ethnic, contemporary casual or evening wears." Hence fabrics like aso-oke Okene, luru, adire, batik and others have been used to make these beautiful outfits paraded here by models at Terra Kulture. Bimpe says she also uses hand paintings and dye on viscose and cliffon. The beauty of it is that these sheer fabrics can be used to make elegant ethnic, contemporary, casual or evening wears. Tagged: Eclectica, Bimpe's fashion exhibition also featured ethnic accessories made with metals shells, beads, coral stones and glass, too. Asked where she gets her inspiration from Bimpe answers: Everything I see around me inspires me, including human being and objects. At times I go to beach to look for materials. The almighty has given me several talents too. She also draws inspiration from her background because she comes from a lineage of creative women. "My great grandmother strung beads and sold kolanuts in Ile Ife, she also made clothes and sold woven fabrics at the same place. My mother also makes clothes and dyes fabrics, she also writes and designs games for children in Ibadan," she revealed. One beautiful attribute of this young and up-coming designer is that she strongly believes in upholding the dignity and charm of the African woman." "Fashion people have seen enough of baring clothes. Clothes are made to cover up, not to expose woman's dignity. Hence my philosophy is to create style, fun and identity that will uphold womanly dignity" she declares. |
