AFTER a successful international tour last year, Ijodee Dance Company has embarked on a nationwide performance trip that is equally turnning out a success. Beginning with some performances in Lagos, the troupe later travelled to Port Harcout, Rivers State. Reports from the Garden City indicated that their presentatation of contemporary dances got the crowd in the oil rich city bubbling.

From Adedayo M. Liadi, Artistic Director cum Choreographer of the dance company, The Guardian learnt that the new age transition piece which they did there in April 17 was warmly "accepted with open arms".

Narrating the troupe's experience, the dreadlock haired dance specialist said: "we arrived Port Harcourt on April 16. We got to the town in the evening. We had left Lagos early but it rained that day so we had to wait a bit for it to subside." But it was like the rain brought blessing for the troupe as its performance the following day was fantastic. Liadi described the event this way: "We had a wonderful show next day, April 17. It was a night to celebrate culture by Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited in collaboration with Total Upstream Nigeria Limited. It was graced with a lot of white people (95 per cent of the people were white). The Red Cross was there also as well as our fellow dance artistes from Cross River State who were there to perform. "We took four of our dances and the masquerade which they loved so much to the performance, they were so thrilled that we had people coming to invite us for another event."

Ijodee will be going for a 3-week camping in Snake Island, near Lagos for the production of Wale Macaulay's The Rape Of Gidiolu. The play to be directed and produced by Macaulay on June 4 at MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos will be choreographed by Liadi. Ijodee dancers will be special guest dancers in the production featuring

Sadiq Daba, Jide Kosoko among other major actors.

reveals that thereafter the dance company will embark on a tour of some European countries including Austria, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. This tour is scheduled to kick off in June and run through July and August this year.

Laidi adds that Ijodee dancers have been awarded schorlaship to study Dance and Choreography at the Dance Web Europe and ImpulsTanz Classes (both in Austria).

The study and schorlaship is supported by Dance Web Europe, Impulstanz Professional Classes and UNESCO Ashebarge in Paris.

Since three years ago when Ijodee evovled some remarkable forms of mordern dance steps that draw largely from African (Nigerian) body language formats, they have travelled extensively around the world for performances that have brought honour and dignity to Nigeria and the artistes alike
